The Mckinney Falls Engagements Proposal
You normally don’t want your proposal story to epitomize Murphy’s Law. But, ours does, and I love it.
On one of our first dates, Jasmine and I took ice cream to the Houston Water Wall. It’s one of the more picturesque and romantic places in town. A three-story horseshoe of water surrounds a central concrete platform that makes people standing in the center feel like they’re diving off a water fall in reverse. At night it is particularly breathtaking, with lights, reflections, and dark silhouettes of classical architecture.
I had planned to propose to Jasmine here. A few weeks before Christmas, just after visiting her home and family, I arranged for us to visit a local landmark hotel. We’d have dinner there and afterwards pick up hot chocolate on our way to the water wall for a dessert picnic. We’d arrive an hour prior to closing. And, my out-of-town sister would arrive early and be disguised as a random visitor to take a hidden picture of the event.
During dinner, the ring burned in my front left coat breast pocket at first. But I had so much fun just talking and laughing with Jasmine that I almost forgot it was one of the biggest nights of our lives. I received occasional text updates from my sister, driving into town. We finished dinner and stopped for the hot chocolate.
In line at Starbucks, I got the text. My sister: “uh, it just turned off.”
“Lights out, water stopped pumping. “
And then, “Oh no, they’re telling us we have to leave.”
Heart racing, the Starbucks guy asking me again what we’d like to order. This was not the plan, and I didn’t know what to do. I excused myself to go to the bathroom, where I called my sister and confirmed that the wall had closed and was pitch black. I had to call an audible.
Amidst a sense of panic, embarrassment, and frustration, I did have one idea. Earlier in the day, we had explored the hotel grounds, which because it was the Christmas season, had numerous decorations, including a ginormous tree filled with lights. I told my sister to meet there. I had to drive to the waterwall and pretend that I didn’t already know the lights were off. Then, I pitched the idea to head back to the hotel. The whole time, I was texting directions to my sister. I must have been nervous because Jasmine called me out, saying, “stop driving like a madman; you never text and drive.”
But we arrived back safely. And the moment I saw the tree now completely lit with lights, I knew this could never have been better. We found a place right at the base of the trunk where it was as bright as day under the canopy. Jasmine looked incredible in her checkered winter coat and black dress. As she arranged our desserts, I got to one knee.
I don’t remember what I said. And neither does Jasmine. I remember what I had planned, but who knows how it came out? But I do remember the final question, and her answer. We kissed and she gave me the biggest hug of my life. She was so excited I had to ask if she actually wanted to wear the ring. Then, my sister came out from hiding and celebrated with us.
It turned out to be a beautiful place for a proposal, in a place and circumstance we’ll never forget.
